CELPIP
Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program (CELPIP) is a general English language proficiency test. There are two types of CELPIP tests – General and General LS. The CELPIP General tests all four skills of Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing. The General LS only tests Listening and Speaking. Both types of tests are used for IRCC immigration purposes. While the General test is approved for Canadian Permanent Resident applications, the General LS test is approved for citizenship applications and is available only in Canada.

How does CELPIP
scoring system work?
CELPIP levels are equivalent to the CLB (Canadian Language Benchmark) levels used for immigration purposes. The scale goes from M to 12, with M (the equivalent of CLB level 0, 1, 2) indicating minimal proficiency and 12 indicating advanced proficiency in workplace and community contexts. CELPIP Reading and Listening are scored out of 38 and often the scores fall in a range that is equivalent to the CELPIP/CLB levels. However, the final level on the Listening or Reading test also heavily depends on which questions are answered correctly because difficult questions account for more than ones earlier on in the test. Some test-takers may find their CELPIP levels are different even though they scored the same in a certain test. For Speaking and Writing tests, the scores are determined based on 4 categories:
-
Content/Coherence: number, quality and organization of ideas and supporting examples
-
Vocabulary: word choice, accuracy and range of phrases and structures Listenability (for
-
Speaking): rhythm, flow, pronunciation, intonation, self-correction, relevance and variety of sentence structures
-
Readability (for Writing): format, connectors and transitions, grammar, sentence structure, spelling and punctuation
-
Task Fulfillment: relevance, completeness, tone, length (Speaking) and word count (Writing)
What is the test format?
CELPIP General is comprehensive of all four skills and thus takes up 3 hours in one sitting, whereas the General LS only takes up approximately 1 hour and 10 minutes. Both tests can be taken consecutively without a separate time slot for Speaking and are completed in one sitting. The test is taken in the following order: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking.
